Does Your Furnace, Heat Pump or Mini Split Need to be Serviced?

Red flags are usually missed, especially when your heating unit is idled. Even if it seems to be operating smoothly, the inner workings are highly susceptible to presumably trivial matters, such as dust. Minor issues quickly develop into extensive damage which can be catastrophic to your heating system. Units that just can’t hack it anymore will be inefficient, noisy, and potentially hazardous all while costing you more and more each month. There are ways to understand when your HVAC system needs repairment. You should act on these now instead of waiting until it needs too many repairs to be worth reviving. Providing a comfortable and healthy home environment during a cold season is essential to any homeowner. Issues with commonly used appliances such as stoves and clothes driers are much easier to identify and diagnose, while HVAC system issues are much harder to detect.
Smell of a gas leak
An HVAC gas leak is obviously a problem in any situation. Gas companies have added mercaptan to the gas so you can smell rotten cabbages or dirty socks since natural gas is odorless. If you have a gas detection device installed in your home, then you won't need to rely on your knowledge if there is a gas leak in your home. It will alert you when it detects a gas leak. Before you approach a leaking furnace, listen for a hissing sound to see where the sound is coming from. Don't light any matches or turn on lights in your home. Turn off the gas supply valve to prevent any more leakage. Reach out to us to schedule a gas leak service call right away.
Ignoring or Neglecting Your HVAC System
Your heating system may be running throughout most of the day and night during the cold months. Neglecting the care of your system will not only trigger multiple issues but will decrease the lifespan of your furnace. A furnace requires somewhat constant attention. For example, the filter should be replaced every six months, at minimum. The system can collect dust and debris which builds up and prevents the system from working properly if the filter is not replaced. You may want to contact your local HVAC provider if you are not annually maintaining your HVAC system. Ask about the Annual Maintenance Plan (and how we can help you save on tune-up appointments) for cost savings.
Loud Noises Coming from Your Heating System At Night
An odd noise could be anything from the neighborhood raccoon, or it could be a part malfunctioning on your furnace. This sound could be the most obvious sign that your heat pump or furnace needs repairment. It may sound like a bang, scrape, or a thump. This noise may not go away on its own and will require a licensed technician to accurately diagnose the issue accurately.
Your Furnace, Heat Pump or Mini Split is Leaking Water
The fix for a water leak issue will depend on what type of furnace system you have. Is it a conventional furnace or a condensing furnace? The two most common problems with a water drip in a conventional furnace for water dripping is, one, a poorly sized flue pipe or, two, a leaky humidifier. For a condensing furnace, the issue may be lie in a clogged condensate system, a failed bad heat exchanger, leaky humidifier, or a broken bad or clogged condensate pump. The diagnosis and repairment of the problem is best left to for certified technicians to diagnose and repair.
Unexpected High Utility Bill
Has your utility bill gone up unexpectedly without any major changes in utility use? A furnace, heat pump, or mini-split needs a repair when it starts to work harder to keep your home heated at the expected temperature. The system can undergo additional damage resulting in extensive repair costs or a whole replacement of the system if you do not address the issue in time. Licensed techs would perform an in-depth diagnostic check on the HVAC system. We go through the crawl space and the attic to check the ducts for any disconnections or air loss.
Cold Air Blowing From Your System
The most unpleasant feeling is having cold air blowing into your already cold home. This issue could have been easily preventable with simple filter changes and annual maintenances. The lack of airflow caused by a blocked by a dirty filter will cause the heat exchanger to overheat. As a result, this can cause the furnace to trip a high limit switch, which forces the furnace burners to shut off, preventing to prevent cracks in the heat exchanger. Another common issue is with the thermocouple not detecting the pilot light is not lit. Again, you should not wait and have a licensed technician diagnose and repair the problem.
Thermostat is Not Working Properly
At times, your thermostat needs a little care if it has been neglected. Sometimes changing the batteries or a good dusting with a small paintbrush will do the trick. Other issues could be due to aging, bad wiring, or an old transformer. It may be time to switch to a newer model.
