If you have a 1,000 sq ft home and use your system 24/7 you might need a filter replacement sooner then someone with a 3,000 sq ft home that runs their unit for only 2 hours each day.

Any use of your HVAC system will lead to dirt build up on the filter. You will want to replace the filter when there is a visible coating of dirt coverage on most of the filter's surface. If you are ever unsure if your filter needs to be replaced, it is better to replace it then to let the filter go past its max capacity.
