How often should I replace my HVAC filters?

Washougal Heating & Cooling • Jun 05, 2018
Dirty HVAC Filter.

Filters not only make sure that the HVAC system doesn't build up with dirt and other contaminants to prevent it from running properly. The filter also takes that dust, dirt, and other contaminants out of the air we breathe inside our homes. Indoor air pollution can cause irritation to the eyes and nose, headache, fatigue, sinus congestion, coughing and sneezing. Most of these symptoms can be relieved from regular filter replacements.

The frequency of filter replacement depends on the size of your home and the amount of time you are running your HVAC system. The average filter lifetime is 90 days, but keep in mind the usage of the system, the number of people and pets living in the home will have an effect on the amount of indoor air contaminants requiring filter replacement more frequently. If you have a 1,000 sq ft home and use your system 24/7 you might need a filter replacement sooner then someone with a 3,000 sq ft home that runs their unit for only 2 hours each day.

Any use of your HVAC system will lead to dirt build up on the filter. You will want to replace the filter when there is a visible coating of dirt coverage on most of the filter's surface. If you are ever unsure if your filter needs to be replaced, it is better to replace it then to let the filter go past its max capacity.

Suggested schedule for filter replacement:

  • Seldom used home or single occupant homes without pets or allergies: you should replace the filter approximately every 6-12 months

  • The typical suburban home without pets: it is recommended to replace the filter every 90 days and with pets every 60 days

  • If you have Multiple pets or have allergies: It is recommended to replace the filter every 30-45 days
